1898 Hard Cider
Branding and package design for a private label beverage
The Challenge
1898 Hard Cider is a private label beverage based in historic Hendersonville, NC, a region abounding in beautiful vistas and apple orchards. Served up by Waverly Inn, a historic bed and breakfast fresh off a logo makeover, this new brew needed a logo and label that could stand out from the crowd.

Strategy
Hops and Hospitality
Central to the revitalized Waverly Inn is a strong social dynamic: the main porch offers a chance to kick back, connect with other guests, and feel like a local.
To highlight the experience, Waverly Inn decided to create a house label for a line of local hard cider. The new label would have to stand out from the crowd on local and regional shelves as well as memorably welcome guests.
Solution
A Taste of History
Our concept drew on the ornamental beauty of Victorian-era typography and design. From tobacco tins to farmers’ almanacs, our forays into researching late 19th century ephemera inspired dozens of directions that were ultimately filtered down to one that captured the essence of the era.

Planting Seeds
While the immediate plan was for a single house beverage, the owners were excited for what the future might hold. Several color variations were created to denote different flavors or varieties, and multiple combinations of the design elements were developed for off-packaging purposes.
